Sedation Dentistry
Wylie, Texas
Sedation dentistry employs medication to help patients experience relaxation during dental procedures. Also referred to as conscious sedation dentistry, patients remain aware while experiencing "forgetfulness and insensitivity to pain." This approach accommodates patients across all age groups.
Common Reasons for Requesting Sedation
- Dental anxiety
- Fear of dental visits
- Sensitive gag reflex
- Needle phobia
- Tooth sensitivity
- Claustrophobia
- Reduced anesthesia response
- Movement control difficulties
- Special needs (physical, cognitive, or behavioral)
Three Primary Sedation Types
1. Inhalation Sedation
"Nitrous oxide sedation or, 'laughing gas'" delivers oxygen and nitrous oxide through a nose mask, producing light-headedness and relaxation with quick post-procedure recovery.
2. Oral Sedation
Administered as pill or liquid approximately one hour before treatment using medications like triazolam or midazolam. Patients remain communicative despite drowsiness; transportation home is required.
3. IV Sedation
"The deepest a patient can go while still maintaining some consciousness." Medication enters bloodstream directly with continuous heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen monitoring. Most patients sleep through treatment and require post-appointment transportation.
