Periodontal Flap Surgery
Wylie, Texas
Periodontal flap surgery, commonly referred to as gum flap surgery, addresses deep periodontal pockets that develop beneath the gum line during advanced gum disease stages. These pockets fill with bacteria, tartar, and plaque, and attack your gum and bone tissue, and cannot be cleaned through conventional brushing and flossing alone.
Candidate Conditions
The procedure treats severe gum disease and related conditions including:
- Necrotizing gingivitis (gum tissue death creating deep crater formations)
- Persistent inflammation with swollen or bleeding gums
- Jawbone irregularities
- Bacterial-filled pockets
- Loose teeth from advanced disease
- Chronic halitosis
- Receding gums
- Cases where non-surgical treatments have proven ineffective
Procedural Steps
- First, a local anesthetic will be used on your gums to numb the area
- The periodontist incises the gums to access tooth roots and bone tissue
- An interdental incision removes inflamed tissue
- Thorough root scaling and planing is performed
- For significant bone loss, grafting may be recommended
- Once all inflamed tissue has been removed, your periodontist will stitch all incisions with dissolvable or non-resorbable sutures
- Follow-up appointments monitor healing progress
