Orthodontic Headgear
Wylie, Texas
Orthodontic headgear corrects severely abnormal bites, dental overcrowding, and supports normal jaw alignment and growth, typically recommended for younger children whose jaws are still developing.
Three Types Available
Cervical Pull
Addresses a malocclusion called an overjet, which appears as a protruding top jaw and front teeth. Straps wrap around the neck and attach to braces.
High Pull
Corrects similar issues with straps attached from the upper jaw to the top and back of the head, particularly useful for children with excessive jaw growth.
Reverse Pull
Treats underbites where the lower teeth jut out past the upper teeth, using rubber bands to attach to top braces.
Usage Requirements
Successful treatment can only be achieved if the device is worn anywhere from 12 to 14 hours a day, sometimes longer. Treatment typically lasts one to two years. Orthodontists recommend wearing headgear after school through evening and overnight to minimize public embarrassment.
Managing Discomfort
Initial discomfort is normal as adjustments are made. Over-the-counter pain medication may be taken to relieve pain, and cold foods like popsicles may provide temporary relief.
