Orthodontic Emergencies
Wylie, Texas
If you experience severe pain or a problem with your orthodontic equipment that cannot be fixed at home, you will need to contact your orthodontist immediately.
General Soreness
Following brace placement, mild soreness is normal. The guide recommends a soft diet, warm saltwater rinses, and over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol. NSAIDs should be avoided since they slow tooth movement. Dental wax can reduce irritation to lips, cheeks, and tongue.
Headgear
Consistent wear as prescribed minimizes discomfort. Damaged or bent equipment requires orthodontist repair.
Loose Appliance
Apply wax temporarily until professional care is available.
Loose Bracket
If still attached to the wire, use wax for comfort. If detachable, save it for your next appointment.
Loose Wire
Use tweezers or pliers to reposition it, or secure with floss tied around the bracket. As a last option, clip the wire behind the last secured tooth using nail clippers, then apply wax if sharp.
Poking Wire
Push it down with a pencil eraser or cover with wax.
