How to Brush and Floss
Wylie, Texas
Maintaining consistent daily oral hygiene prevents decay and disease. This guide covers two essential techniques.
Brushing Instructions
Select a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head and apply a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
- Hold the bristles near the gum line
- Sweep the brush gently back and forth over your teeth and gums in soft strokes or a circular motion, but do not apply too much force
- Include the back surfaces and chewing surfaces of molars
- Brush the tongue to eliminate bacteria
Flossing Instructions
- Cut approximately 18 inches of floss and wind it around both middle fingers, leaving a 3-4 inch gap
- Slowly guide the floss between your teeth. If the gap is tight, use a gentle sawing motion to slip the floss between the gap
- Floss both sides of each interdental space separately
- The floss should curve around the first side of the tooth to form a letter ‘C’
- Work around the entire mouth, including molar backsides
