Orthodontic Retention
Wylie, Texas

After braces are removed, patients enter a retention phase rather than completing treatment. You will be given a retainer to wear for at least 22 hours a day, for at least 24 months.

Why Retention Matters

Teeth depend on periodontal ligaments—connective fibers anchoring them to the jawbone. Following orthodontic movement, these ligaments require months to stabilize. Wearing a retainer supports this adjustment process and prevents teeth from shifting.

Three Retainer Types

Hawley Retainers

The most durable option features a thin mold with a wire maintaining tooth alignment.

Clear Plastic Retainers

Similar to transparent aligners, these custom-fitted plastic devices secure teeth discreetly.

Fixed Bonded Retainers

Typically applied to lower front teeth, a wire gets permanently cemented to the tongue-facing tooth surface.

Maintenance

  • Brush Hawley retainers regularly
  • Use denture cleaner for clear varieties
  • Fixed retainers require specialized flossing tools
  • Store retainers in protective cases to prevent accidental loss
  • Avoid hot water to prevent warping
