Gum Grafting
Wylie, Texas
When gums recede substantially, a periodontist may recommend gum grafting. This procedure addresses tissue pulling away from teeth, which exposes more of the tooth or the tooth root and potentially damages supporting bone structure while increasing sensitivity.
Types of Gum Grafts
Connective Tissue
The most common approach uses subepithelial tissue from the roof of the mouth, stitched around the exposed root.
Free Gingival
Tissue is directly removed from the palate and attached to treated areas. This method is preferred for patients with thin gums.
Pedicle
Graft material is taken from nearby gums with one edge remaining attached, then stretched to cover the exposed root.
Tissue Bank
An alternative using donor material with tissue-stimulating proteins to encourage natural bone and tissue regeneration.
Why It Matters
Untreated recession will result in tooth loss if left unaddressed, making early intervention important for preserving dental health.
